Mungonu: Why the heinous corruption should not be overlooked – By Christopher Sunday

In the archives of Nigeria’s tumultuous political history, few scandals have reverberated with such resonance as the recent indictment of the Office of the Immediate National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno. The corridors of power are ablaze with allegations of financial malfeasance, dating back to the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Amidst the dissonance of accusations, a timeline emerges, shedding light on the intricate web of corruption that has ensnared the nation’s highest authorities.

Cast your mind back to the tumultuous year of 2021. Against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and social unrest, the Nigerian Senate issued a clarion call for accountability. In January of that year, amidst mounting pressure from both lawmakers and the public, the Senate urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate allegations of financial impropriety within the Office of the NSA. Thus began a saga that would grip the nation’s consciousness for months to come.

As the year progressed, the shadows of suspicion grew ever darker. Reports began to surface, alleging the diversion of funds totaling N1,075,266,599.06, $2,301,329.54, and €196,257.42 by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) under the watchful gaze of General Babagana Monguno. These staggering figures paint a picture of unchecked corruption, eroding the foundations of trust upon which Nigeria’s governance rests.

Despite the mounting evidence and fervent appeals for justice, the wheels of accountability ground to a halt. General Monguno (retd), concealed within the halls of power, seemed impervious to the clamour for his prosecution. The spectre of impunity loomed large, casting a pall over the aspirations of a nation yearning for transparency and integrity in its leadership.

Fast forward to the present day, and the saga continues unabated. The 10th Assembly, under the stewardship of Sen. Godswill Akpabio and Hon. Tajudeen Abass, stands at a crossroads. The Nigerian people look to their elected representatives with a mixture of hope and trepidation, awaiting decisive action in the pursuit of justice. Hence, the former NSA must be summoned for questioning, and the Senate must assert its authority with unwavering resolve.

In this crucible of uncertainty, one figure looms large: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As the custodian of Nigeria’s highest office, he bears the weighty responsibility of upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the interests of the Nigerian people. President Tinubu’s leadership in this critical moment will be measured not by words alone but by decisive action to root out corruption wherever it may reside.

The narrative of Nigeria’s struggle against corruption is as old as the nation itself. Yet, in the face of adversity, there remains a glimmer of hope.

The voices of the Nigerian people, united in their demand for justice, cannot be silenced. The time for action is now.

This is the right time for Babagana Monguno to account for his atrocities. Let us stand together and ensure that those responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to account.

The time for accountability is now!
