Ibaji’s Crude Oil and the Politics of Representation: A Call for Fairness in 2027

Politics is most effective when it is built on the foundation of equity, justice, and fairness. In Idah Federal Constituency, the principle of political rotation has long ensured balanced representation among the four Local Government Areas: Ibaji, Idah, Igalamela/Odolu, and Ofu. However, as the 2027 elections approach, it is time to reaffirm this principle by ensuring that the next House of Representatives seat returns to Ibaji Local Government Area.

Ibaji is not just another Local Government in Kogi State; it is home to the state’s crude oil reserves, making it a significant economic pillar for the entire constituency. The discovery and ongoing development of crude oil in Ibaji place the area in a unique position that demands greater political representation. Ibaji’s resources contribute substantially to the state’s economic potential, yet its people have not been adequately compensated in terms of political appointments or infrastructural development. The House of Representatives seat presents an opportunity to correct this imbalance and ensure that Ibaji’s voice is effectively heard at the national level.

The presence of crude oil in Ibaji introduces important economic and political factors that should not be ignored. Economic power and influence play a significant role in elections, as candidates from resource-rich areas often attract financial backing from companies, investors, and stakeholders in the sector. This financial support can strengthen campaigns, making it easier to mobilize voters and influence political narratives. An Ibaji candidate, backed by the economic potential of the region, can bring a new level of economic engagement and investment to the constituency.

Geopolitical considerations also come into play when an area holds valuable mineral resources. Political parties and power blocs often seek control over resource allocation and management, making Ibaji a strategic location for leadership. Given the crude oil reserves in Ibaji, it is essential for the region to have direct representation in the House of Representatives to ensure that decisions affecting its resources are not made without the input of those directly impacted.

Another crucial factor is zoning and representation. In many cases, political parties deliberately select candidates from resource-rich areas to ensure an equitable distribution of leadership and economic benefits. The history of Idah Federal Constituency has shown a rotational pattern in representation. The slot has moved from Ibaji (Frank Ineke) to Idah (Emmanuel Egwuda), then to Igalamela/Odolu (Humphrey Abah), and finally to Ofu (David Zacharia, the current representative). Since all the other Local Governments have had their turn, the seat should rightfully return to Ibaji in 2027. Ignoring this zoning tradition would be unfair and could create political discontent.

Beyond the House of Representatives seat, Ofu Local Government has already enjoyed significant political appointments. Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, the Minister of Solid Minerals, is from Ofu. The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Comrade Joel Salifu Oyibo, is also from Ofu. The current House of Representatives Member, Hon. David Zacharia, is yet another son of Ofu. It is, therefore, unjustifiable for Ofu or any other Local Government to retain this seat when Ibaji is yet to reclaim its rightful turn. Political power must be shared equitably to maintain peace, unity, and trust among the different Local Government Areas.

Government revenue and development promises are another key factor in the political relevance of mineral-rich areas. Candidates from Ibaji can campaign on the promise of harnessing crude oil wealth for economic development, thereby appealing to voters who see resource management as a means of progress. The presence of crude oil should directly translate into infrastructural growth, employment opportunities, and social development, but this can only happen when Ibaji has strong representation at the national level.

Elite interests and lobbying also shape elections in areas with significant mineral resources. Political elites and investors often fund candidates who will protect their business interests. However, this should not be at the expense of the local people. Ibaji needs a representative who will advocate for fair resource management that benefits the community, rather than serving the interests of a few powerful individuals. A strong Ibaji candidate can balance these interests by ensuring that both the people and investors benefit from the crude oil industry.

The issue of employment and economic opportunities is another critical reason Ibaji should produce the next House of Representatives member. Candidates from resource-rich areas can gain voter support by promising job creation and economic growth. In Ibaji, where unemployment remains a major challenge, a representative with a clear vision for economic transformation through crude oil utilization will resonate strongly with the electorate. A candidate from Ibaji will have the direct mandate to push for policies that ensure the community benefits from the wealth of its land.

Additionally, security and resource control agendas cannot be overlooked. In many areas where mineral resources exist, there have been conflicts over ownership, revenue sharing, and environmental concerns. Candidates who advocate for local control, fair revenue distribution, and improved security tend to gain political favor. Ibaji has faced years of neglect, and without strong political representation, there is a risk of external interests exploiting its resources without accountability. A representative from Ibaji can ensure that policies are enacted to protect the land and the rights of its people.

Foreign and private sector interests also play a role in shaping elections in resource-rich areas. International and private investors in the crude oil sector may indirectly influence elections by supporting candidates who align with their business objectives. While private investment is necessary for economic growth, it must be regulated to ensure that the local population does not suffer from unfair exploitation. A representative from Ibaji will be in the best position to negotiate policies that safeguard both local and national interests.

However, while mineral resources are a significant factor in political considerations, they do not automatically guarantee electoral success. Other factors such as party structure, ethnic and religious considerations, governance records, and public perception also play crucial roles in determining who gets elected. It is important that Ibaji presents a competent, visionary, and community-driven candidate who can unify the constituency and drive development.

Ibaji has patiently waited its turn in the political cycle. Now, it is time for justice to be served. The 2027 elections must mark the return of the House of Representatives seat to Ibaji Local Government Area. Anything short of this would be a clear case of marginalization and an insult to the principles of fairness and democracy.

The time for Ibaji is now. The time for justice is now. Let fairness prevail!
