The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has launched an Integrated Earthquake Monitoring Station at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UniZik), Awka, Anambra State.
The station, equipped with a Trimble R750 GNSS Continuously Operating Reference Receiver and a Broadband Guralp Centimus Seismometer, is designed to enhance the monitoring of geodynamic events in the region. The facility is part of NASRDA’s Integrated Earthquake Monitoring Network aimed at improving disaster preparedness and safety measures in Nigeria.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, expressed her appreciation to the Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, for selecting UniZik for the project. “This station will significantly boost our research capabilities and contribute to the university’s efforts in space science and technology,” she said, urging relevant departments to leverage the facility for collaborative research.
Dr. Dodo Joseph, Director of NASRDA’s Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics, represented the DG at the event. He emphasized the importance of partnerships between NASRDA and academic institutions in addressing societal challenges such as earthquake risks. “Through space technology, we are turning data into safety for communities,” Dr. Dodo said, assuring continued support for joint initiatives.
The Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Adepoju, in a message delivered by Dr. Dodo, urged UniZik to protect the infrastructure, stating it was crucial for Nigeria’s future in space science.
The event concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Nnamdi Azikiwe University and NASRDA, solidifying their collaboration in space research and technology.
The commissioning of the station marks a significant step in enhancing Nigeria’s capacity for earthquake monitoring and disaster management.
