Kogi East Politics: The Need for Youth Inclusiveness – By Muhammed Kabiru Imam

Politics, as we all know, is a game of strategies, but is more of a game of strength than numbers. The youth are people of vigour and vitality, exuberance and valour. So, if you ask me, they’re the best group of people to be included in the political activities of every state or nation. Unfortunately, this has not been so.

The Nigerian state of Kogi, the future of its politics lies in the hands of its youth. With more than 60% of the state’s population under the age of 35, the need for youth inclusiveness in politics has become ever more pressing. The active involvement of young people in the political process is not just an option; it is a necessity for fostering progress, innovation, and sustainable development.

The youth represents a diverse pool of talents, ideas, and fresh perspectives that can breathe new life into Kogi politics. Engaging young minds in decision-making processes can lead to innovative policy solutions and a departure from the conventional approaches that have sometimes hindered progress. Including youth in political discourse ensures that the voices of all segments of the population are heard, fostering an environment where solutions are driven by inclusivity and diversity.

Unemployment rates among young people in Kogi East have reached alarming levels, leading to feelings of disappointment or disillusionment and exclusion from the political landscape. By actively including the youth in politics, the government can better address the root causes of unemployment and create a favorable ecosystem for job creation. Sadly, what most governments that have been in power always do is to recycle the old people, while treating the youth with negligence. It’s our sad reality!

So many benefits, as I personally observed, are embedded in involving youth in politics, but the drive for our political leaders to recycle the old men back to power has blinded them. Youth inclusiveness in politics can be a catalyst for breaking the cycle of political apathy prevalent among young people. By actively involving them in political decision-making, the youth will develop a sense of ownership and responsibility for the state’s future. As they see their contributions making a difference, they are more likely to remain engaged in the political process throughout their lives, ensuring a continuous influx of new ideas and energy into the system.

A politically engaged youth is vital for the stability and growth of democracy in Kogi. When young people feel connected to the political system, they are more likely to participate in civic duties, such as voting and community development activities. This increased participation fosters a sense of unity and social cohesion among diverse groups, enhancing the overall fabric of society. However, refusing to engage youth in the political process in the state is one of the dominant reasons

The inclusion of youth in Kogi politics is not just an act of goodwill; it is a strategic investment in the state’s future. By recognizing the unique potential of young people and actively involving them in decision-making processes, Kogi can tap into a wellspring of talent, innovation, and energy that will propel the state towards prosperity and sustainable development. And the progress of every state is not really guaranteed if the youth aren’t at the forefront of the political process. Unless the youth are included in the day-to-day political affairs, moving forward could be a Herculean task.
