The Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has officially assumed regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Kogi State.

The transfer was officially completed on Wednesday in Abuja with Engr. Ibrahim S. Abdwaaris, Chairman/CEO of KSERC, receiving the handover from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Speaking, the NERC Boss, Engr. Garba assured KERC of continuous support and collaboration to ensure a seamless transition, pledged that NERC would provide all necessary documents and data required for KERCโ€™s smooth operation.

“We shall continue to extend our hands of friendship because we want a smooth transition,” Engr. Garba stated. “We will maintain our partnership with you for the good of the industry.”

Responding, Engr. Abdwaaris, expressed appreciation for the cooperative relationship between both regulatory bodies, acknowledging the trust placed in his management team.

“We have received the necessary training to hit the ground running, enabling us to take off with ease, and I must thank NERC for this opportunity,” he said.

He further reaffirmed KERCโ€™s commitment to working closely with NERC as it assumes full responsibility for regulating Kogi Stateโ€™s electricity market.

Recalled, The establishment of KERC is in line with the Fifth Alteration (No. 33) of the Electricity Act, 2023, which amended the 1999 Constitution to move electricity generation, transmission, and distribution from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List.

This constitutional amendment empowers states to legislate and regulate their electricity sectors, reducing dependence on private distribution companies such as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) which has been in charge of electricity distribution in Kogi State.

Kogi State currently has an estimated 120-megawatt daily electricity demand, and this initiative aims to ensure a more stable, reliable, and affordable power supply for homes, businesses, and industries across the state.
