President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, paid a visit to Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi at his residence in Nottingham, United Kingdom, on Thursday.
The visit was part of efforts to personally assess the player’s recovery following a serious injury sustained during a Premier League clash.
Gusau, who was accompanied by members of the NFF Executive Board, expressed support and encouragement to Awoniyi, who is currently recovering from surgery.
The striker suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with a goalpost during a match between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
During the visit, Gusau conveyed his relief at seeing Awoniyi in high spirits and making steady progress in his recovery. He praised the player’s resilience and assured him of continued support from the NFF.
“Taiwo is a key asset for both the national team and his club. We’ll keep a close eye on his recovery and offer all necessary assistance to help him return to full fitness,” Gusau said.
The NFF President also recently took up a new role as President of the West African Football Union Zone B (WAFU B).
In response, Awoniyi expressed his gratitude to Gusau and the visiting delegation, describing the visit as deeply encouraging. He reaffirmed his commitment to a strong recovery with the help of his medical team.
“I truly appreciate the visit and the support. My rehabilitation is going well, and I’m determined to come back stronger,” Awoniyi said.
The striker has been recovering at home under medical supervision, with regular monitoring from Nottingham Forest’s medical staff.
The visit highlights the NFF’s dedication to the welfare of Nigerian footballers abroad and its ongoing efforts to maintain strong relationships with national team players wherever they may be.
