The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concerns over the growing spate of insecurity in Kogi state ahead of the gubernatorial election scheduled for November.

The Commission is also worried about the security situation in Imo state.

INEC’s National Commissioner, Mallam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, raised the concerns during a meeting with media executives in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Wednesday.

The Commissioner said, INEC is committed to conducting peaceful and successful elections in the three states (Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo) but that the prevailing security situation is a major challenge.

He appealed to all stakeholders, including politicians, security agencies, and voters, to play their roles in ensuring peaceful elections.

Recall that Kogi state has recorded a series of pre-election violence leaving the SDP Secretariat in the state capital and in Kogi East destroyed. The Secretariat of the APC in Dekina Local Government Area of the state was also vandalized by yet to be known gunmen.
