The 4 Brigade Chapter of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) has commemorated this year’s International Women’s Day with a well-coordinated programme aimed at promoting health awareness, physical fitness, and the empowerment of women within military communities in Edo State.

The event was held at the NAOWA Skills Acquisition Centre on 17 March 2026 in Ekehuan Military Cantonment, Benin City, and attracted a large turnout of barrack women, reflecting a shared commitment to personal wellbeing and societal development. The celebration further underscored the vital role women play in strengthening families, communities, and national growth.

In her opening remarks, the Zonal Coordinator, NAOWA 4 Brigade Chapter, Mrs Mariam Aina Balogun, welcomed participants and highlighted the significance of the celebration. She disclosed that the theme for this year’s event is “Give to Gain: For All Women and Girls – Rights, Equality and Empowerment.” She noted that women remain central to societal growth and stability, urging them to continue fostering unity, resilience, and self-development in their daily lives.

Delivering his goodwill message, the Commander, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, commended NAOWA members for their steadfast support to their husbands and families. He also acknowledged their contributions to nation-building and emphasized the importance of sustained empowerment initiatives for women, whom he described as the backbone of the home front. He further described NAOWA members as resilient and indispensable pillars of the military community.

The Special Guest of Honour, Mrs Eyitoyosi Shonibare, in her remarks, outlined NAOWA’s mission and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to empowering women, enhancing the welfare of military families, and promoting community development initiatives within the barrack. She also stressed the importance of self-care, encouraging women to prioritize both their physical fitness and mental health while striving for personal and collective development.

The celebration was marked by a variety of engaging activities, including a road walk, group fitness exercises, and an energetic Zumba session, all designed to promote healthy living through regular physical activity. The event also featured colourful drama presentations by NAOWA students and members of the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), as well as vibrant cultural dance displays that added life to the atmosphere.

A major highlight of the celebration was the medical awareness session, during which participants received practical guidance on first aid administration, fire prevention methods, and emergency response strategies.
